Star Wars Celebration 2019 - Part 1
Yesterday, Wednesday May 16, 2018 the good folks at Star Wars Celebration caused a disturbance in the force, felt by Star Wars fans across the galaxy...or at least the internet.
Star Wars Celebration, the only convention dedicated to some hokey religion that worships ancient weapons, that allows fans to gather and celebrate all that is Star Wars. Normally they host one every year and it moves around the globe, although seemingly spending more time in the United States than abroad. Star Wars Celebration, or SWC for short, took 2018 off for reasons unknown and have been quietly waiting like the Sith to make their presence known. Yesterday was that day.
I am of mixed emotions about their announcement, as it is a joyous occasion to hear of its return, and on the flip side, it's in Chicago, Il., which makes it far more difficult to get to. Rumors leading up to the announcement had led us to believe it would be making its return to sunny Southern California and perhaps align with the grand opening of the new Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land at Disneyland, along with Star Wars: Episode IX which is set to be released in May of 2019. These rumors turned out to be nothing more than a Jedi mind trick, which I'm sad to say I was not strong enough to withstand. Now faced with the decision and many obstacles weighing in on whether or not to attend, if we can at all?
More information will be released in the coming days. No specific ticket prices and ticket options have mentioned, except that tickets will go on sale at 12:00PM CDT on June 5, 2018.
In years past they have had options of VIP tickets, multi-day passes and single day passes available, and despite their surprise choice of venue, there is little reason to suspect an ambush on any newly formatted ticketing formats....but then again, "Difficult to see, Always in motion is the future." - Master Yoda.
One thing I would like to touch on which may help explain what seems like a surprising choice of venue is that according to statista.com, the McCormick Place in Chicago, where the 2019 SWC will be held, is currently the largest convention center in the United States, topping out at just over two and a half million square feet! That's no moon, that's one big ass convention center! This could easily explain why they want to host the next SWC there. Last years SWC of 2017 was held in Orlando Florida at the Orange County Convention Center, which according to statista.com is the second largest convention center in the United States, topping out just over two million square feet. So, for those wondering then, where does the Anaheim Convention center stack up? According to the LA Times, the Anaheim Convention Center is just over a million square feet, not even half the size of the McCormick in Chicago. Hopefully they will be aiming to host the largest every SWC and by that, making their profits in volume and not crazy high ticket prices?
More to come regarding SWC 2019 as the information is released. Regardless of whether we attend or not, it will no doubt be exciting to see what they offer and who will be attending from the franchise.
May the Force Be with You.
