A Snack From the Future
While strolling through Disneyland, despite being busy running from attraction to attraction, it is difficult not to notice the beautiful plants strewn about.
Each area, from the parking structure to Downtown Disney and of course each themed land in both Disney California Adventure and Disneyland.
Specifically when walking through Tomorrowland you will notice there is a strong theme playing there.
All of the plants throughout Tomorrowland are edible. The idea behind this is simple. In the future we would/will have sustained foods, grown on farms and potentially the idea stretches as far as saying they would be community gardens/farms where anyone could go and pick the produce.
In Tomorrowland, this future is a reality. Guests are allowed to pick any of the vegetables or fruit and eat them. Cast members recommend that you rinse them off prior to eating, and ask that you only grab those that you can reach without climbing on railings or planters or in any way being unsafe. But many are very accessible and easily within arms reach.
When I used to work there as a cast member, I was a lead in Tomorrowland for a period of time and my favorite produce were the strawberries. Back then, they used to plant them near the entrance and I would gladly pick some and wash them off and eat them. I can't say I every took a head of lettuce or anything, but so far as I know, guests are more than allowed to do so. I am not sure of a limit on how much you can pick, I'm sure you're not supposed to clear out an entire planter, however, a few items here and there should be just fine.
So the next time you're walking through Tomorrowland, and you find yourself hungry for a quick and healthy snack, perhaps you'll look at the planters around you to satisfy you're craving.
